How to make a collage to print
- Pick the print size. Choose 4×6 (standing up or lying down), 5×7, 8×10 or A4. Each is made at 300 dpi, the sharpness photo labs print at.
- Add your photos. Add up to 20 photos, ideally the originals from your camera or phone, and pick a layout drawn for them.
- Keep faces off the very edge. Labs trim a sliver off each side when they cut, so drag faces and words a little in from the edge. Add spacing for a white border round every photo.
- Download and print. Download the JPG and send it to a photo lab or your printer, choosing the same paper size so it isn’t cropped.
Print sizes at 300 dpi
| For | Shape | Size in pixels | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Print, tall | 4×6 | 1200 × 1800 | The same 4 × 6 inch print, standing up. |
| Print, wide | 4×6 | 1800 × 1200 | A 6 × 4 inch print at 300 dpi, the usual photo-lab size. |
| 5×7 | 1500 × 2100 | A 5 × 7 inch print or card at 300 dpi. | |
| 8×10 | 2400 × 3000 | An 8 × 10 inch print at 300 dpi; the same shape as a 4:5 Instagram post. | |
| A4 | 2480 × 3508 | A4 paper (210 × 297 mm) at 300 dpi, for home printers. | |
| Square | 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 | The classic post; also fits most profile pictures and messages. |
Square here is the Instagram size, 1080 × 1080, which prints well up to about 3.5 inches; for a bigger square print, make an 8×10 and ask the lab for a square crop.
Tips for printed collages
- Use your best originals. Print shows what a screen hides: soft focus and noise get bigger with the print.
- Fewer photos for small prints. On a 4×6, four to six photos stay easy to see; an 8×10 or A4 can take twelve or more.
- White borders look classic in print. A little spacing on white gives a gallery look; none at all suits a poster.
- Gifts and albums. A 5×7 fits most cards and frames; 8×10 is the usual frame for a wall.
Questions
What resolution should a collage for printing be?
300 dpi, which is what photo labs print at. Every print size here is made at 300 dpi: a 4×6 is 1200 × 1800 pixels, a 5×7 is 1500 × 2100, an 8×10 is 2400 × 3000 and A4 is 2480 × 3508.
How do I make a 4×6 photo collage?
Choose 4×6, standing up or lying down, add your photos and pick a layout. Download the JPG and order it as a 4×6 (or 6×4) print.
Will my photos look sharp in print?
They will if the photos themselves have enough pixels. Use the originals, not screenshots or photos saved from messages, and don’t zoom a small photo far into a big frame.
Why was my print cropped?
Most labs trim a little from each edge, and a print size of a different shape gets cropped to fit. Order the same size you made, keep faces off the very edge, or choose Fit rather than Fill when you print at home.
Can I add a white border?
Yes. Move Spacing up for white space between the photos and round the edge, and pick a different colour under Background if you like.
Is it free?
Yes, with no sign-up and no watermark, and your photos stay on your device while the collage is made.
Can I print an Instagram collage?
An 8×10 print is the same 4:5 shape as an Instagram post, so the same layout works for both. Make the print here at 8×10 for full sharpness, rather than printing the 1080-pixel Instagram file.
